Pop Up Tents Shelter The World's Homeless

Pop Up Tents are popping up around the world as natural disasters force people from their homes. From Haiti to Pakistan, these shelters have become the semi-permanent dwellings of millions

Although Haiti's Earthquake wrecked its havoc more than seven months ago, rebuilding efforts have been slow, and in some places nonexistent. Thousands who moved into tent cities put up days after the earthquake still live under canopies with no expectation of moving back home anytime soon.

With an estimated 1.5 million Haitians, still homeless, and relocation camp construction languishing, living in a canopy has become normal everyday life for many. However, the tents, which have withstood rain and mud for seven months, are starting to wear out, organizations like Tents for Haiti that buys, and ship tents to that shattered island have seen a sharp decline in donations.

New disasters like the flooding in Pakistan, have gained people's attention and dollars. Both government and non-government organizations (NGO's) are shipping in tents to shelter an estimated two million people driven from their homes. Tents are springing up in muddy fields along main roads and at the edges of major cities

The suffering was highlighted by the Pakistani President visiting the tent city in the unbearable heat in Sukkur, trying to comfort an old woman by patting her on the head. Or by the heartbreaking footage of a three month old child crying and cowering on the floor of her tent.

Maurizio Giuliano, spokesperson for the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs has identified shelter for the victims of the flood as the greatest and most urgent concern. Guliano emphasized the need for hundreds of thousands of tents, and stressed the fact they are working in close cooperation with the government. The goal is to bring together donors, U. N.
